Some felt San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy's No. 15 ranking in Nick Shook's first NFL.com quarterback rankings of the 2026 season was disrespectful. Just two weeks into the season, Purdy has climbed significantly on the list.
Shook released his latest quarterback rankings, placing Purdy at No. 3. That's a 12-spot jump from his initial ranking and moves the 49ers quarterback from Tier 3 to Tier 1. It's also a five-spot improvement from his ranking in last week's list.
Purdy is coming off a remarkable performance against the Miami Dolphins. He completed 20 of 22 pass attempts (90.9 percent) for 287 yards and two touchdowns, finishing with a 149.1 passer rating in Week 2. He also rushed for a touchdown in the 49ers' 35-13 win.
The performance earned Purdy NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the third time in his career.
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen leads Shook's rankings, followed by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes at No. 2. While Shook considers Allen an MVP candidate, he also believes Purdy deserves consideration for the annual award.
"Brock Purdy is another early MVP candidate after lighting up the Rams and Dolphins to start the season, posting a league-best completion percentage of 80.4," Shook wrote.
Additionally, Purdy has thrown for 492 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception while posting an impressive 125.6 passer rating.
His 149.1 passer rating against the Dolphins marked the eighth time in his career that he has recorded a rating of at least 140.0, the most such performances by any quarterback in his first five NFL seasons.
