There was no Australian hangover on Sunday for the San Francisco 49ers, who crushed the Miami Dolphins 35-13 in their home opener at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.
The 49ers picked up where they left off after their 27-7 Week 1 win over the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, particularly on offense. The 49ers racked up five touchdowns in their first five possessions on Sunday, while their defense put in a largely dominant showing in the second half after a bend-but-don't-break performance in the first half.
Brock Purdy put on an All-Pro-caliber performance at quarterback for the 49ers, completing 20-of-22 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns with three carries for 30 yards and one rushing touchdown. Malik Willis finished with 197 yards on 14-of-23 passing for the Dolphins with one touchdown.
49ers limited to two possessions in first half but turn them into 14 points
After the Dolphins opened the game with a nine-play drive that led to a missed field goal attempt from 51 yards, the 49ers began at their own 41-yard line and put together a 12-play, 59-yard drive that ended in a touchdown run by Christian McCaffrey. The drive included two key third-down conversions, with one of them being a 16-yard completion to McCaffrey from the Miami 17-yard line to set the 49ers up with a 1st-and-goal at the 1. McCaffrey ran in two plays later to give the 49ers a 7-0 first-quarter lead.

The Dolphins took over at their own 27-yard line following the kickoff and moved across midfield with the help of a 12-yard completion to receiver Malik Washington and a 17-yard run by running back Devon Achane. A tush-push run from Willis gave the Dolphins a first down on a 4th-and-1 from the 49ers' 29-yard line, and the Dolphins eventually moved into a 1st-and-goal at the 7-yard line. But the 49ers held firm on defense again as their pass rush ran Willis out of bounds for sacks on second and third down to force a field goal. Kicker Riley Patterson connected on the field goal from 28 yards out, cutting the 49ers' lead to 7-3 after a 17-play drive.
The 49ers began their second drive at their own 29-yard line after the kickoff with 9:49 remaining. Purdy got things going with a 10-yard run on the first play of the drive and added an 18-yard run three plays later to get the 49ers deep into Dolphins territory. A 20-yard completion to wide receiver Demarcus Robinson moved the 49ers to the 4-yard line, and Purdy finished things off two plays later with a two-yard touchdown run to cap an eight-play, 71-yard drive and give the 49ers a 14-3 lead.

The 49ers would have held the Dolphins to a three-and-out on the next possession, but the Dolphins were bailed out by a roughing-the-passer penalty on defensive end Keion White. The penalty moved the Dolphins across midfield before they faced a 3rd-and-9 at the 49ers' 43-yard line. Willis converted with a 23-yard pass to Washington to get the Dolphins to the 20-yard line, then after the two-minute warning, Willis converted a 3rd-and-4 with a 7-yard completion to receiver Caleb Douglas to set up a 1st-and-goal at the 7. But the 49ers' defense wound up holding firm in the red zone yet again. After two runs from Achane advanced the ball to the 3-yard line, the Dolphins moved back 10 yards after a holding penalty on rookie offensive lineman Kaydn Proctor. Then, the 49ers stopped Achane for a 5-yard gain, forcing the Dolphins to settle for a 24-yard field goal as time expired in the half to cut the lead to 14-6.
The 49ers ended the half with only two possessions but took full advantage of both. The Dolphins outgained the 49ers 165-to-125 in the first half while also dominating time of possession (19:17 to 10:43). Willis completed 8-of-13 passes for 84 yards in the half against 7-of-8 for 73 yards for Purdy.
49ers turn up the heat, dominate in the second half
The 49ers made quick work of the first possession of the third quarter, opening up at their own 35-yard line and quickly advancing to the Dolphins' 25-yard line on a 40-yard completion to tight end George Kittle. A 5-yard run by McCaffrey and an 8-yard catch by McCaffrey gave the 49ers a first down at the 12-yard line, then Purdy and Kittle connected again to give the 49ers a 21-6 lead on a 12-yard touchdown less than two minutes into the half.

The first three-and-out of the game came on the next possession with the help of a second-down sack by defensive end Nick Bosa and safety Marques Sigle. The 49ers then took over at their own 29-yard line after the punt and quickly faced a 3rd-and-11, but Purdy connected on a 21-yard pass to Deebo Samuel to move the 49ers to their own 49-yard line. A 17-yard completion to wide receiver Mike Evans moved the 49ers to the Miami 34-yard line, then a 21-yard completion to fullback Kyle Juszczyk set the 49ers up with a first down at the 13. A 5-yard run by running back Kaelon Black and a 2-yard catch by Kittle put the 49ers in a 3rd-and-3 situation at the 6-yard line, and Purdy and Juszczyk finished the drive from there with a touchdown to give the 49ers a 28-6 third-quarter lead.

The Dolphins followed the touchdown with what may have been one of the uglier possessions of the still-early NFL season. An 11-yard completion gave them a first down on the first play of the possession, but they moved backward after a holding penalty negated a 9-yard pass. After a short run by Achane, two incompletions that included a drop on 3rd-and-15 forced a punt, punter and former 49er Bradley Pinion dropped the snap and was tackled at the 27-yard line to give the 49ers the ball.

The 49ers struck quickly from there as Purdy connected with Evans for a 27-yard completion to the 1-yard line. McCaffrey followed the catch with his second 1-yard touchdown run of the day to open up a 35-6 lead.

Another three-and-out followed the touchdown, and the 49ers began their next possession at their own 12-yard line after a 36-yard return by Jacob Cowing was wiped out due to a penalty. The 49ers moved inside Dolphins' territory to the 39-yard line but were forced to punt after Purdy was called for intentional grounding on a third-down play.
The Dolphins punted after six plays on their next possession, which came to an end on a third-down sack by Keion White. The 49ers took over with 6:56 remaining and put Mac Jones into the game at quarterback in place of Purdy, then they punted back to the Dolphins after three plays. The Dolphins turned the ensuing possession into a late touchdown on a 77-yard completion to wide receiver Ryan Miller to cut the lead to 35-13.

The 49ers ran out the clock on their final possession to move to 2-0 on the season with the win. The Dolphins fell to 0-2 with the loss.
Game Notes
Today's meeting was the second between the 49ers and Dolphins since December 4, 2022, which marked the beginning of the Brock Purdy era in San Francisco. Purdy entered that game in place of injured starter Jimmy Garoppolo and led the 49ers to a 33-17 win... The Dolphins still hold a slight all-time edge in the series (9-8)... The 49ers were listed as 14.5-point favorites heading into the game... His 2-yard catch in the third quarter was the 600th of George Kittle's career... Demarcus Robinson was carted off the field after his 20-yard catch with an ankle injury, leaving an already-shorthanded receiving corps without another veteran... The 49ers will be back in action at Levi's Stadium next Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals (1-1). The game will kick off at 4:05 p.m. ET/1:05 p.m. PT and will air on FOX.
