After Wednesday's practice, Sorensen spoke to reporters, praising the new interior linemen.
"It's been great," Sorensen shared. "The whole group's been really fun to work with and watch and see how they work. Elliot is so explosive. He's so powerful. And he's got some movement, too, but he's explosive. He's so big. He's a lot bigger than you think. You stand next to him, and he does have very powerful hands."
"And Maliek is very dynamic. Moves really well, but he also has that power, too. And you're seeing that from Hargrave and from Kevin [Givens] and Kalia [Davis] and really all those [guys]. T.Y. [McGill]. I mean, just the whole group, you're seeing them compete and seeing those explosive, dynamic guys that we like, that can move but also have power, and it's fun to watch them all compete."
Collins is coming off a five-sack 2023 campaign, during which he recorded a career-high 41 tackles while playing 64 percent of the defensive snaps with the Texans. Elliott recorded 21 tackles and 2.5 sacks while playing 42 percent of the defensive snaps with the Cleveland Browns.
Brandon Staley in the booth
Sorensen confirmed that he would be on the sidelines during games this season. Meanwhile, newcomer Brandon Staley, the 49ers' assistant head coach who has been actively involved with the defense this offseason, will be up in the booth., ready to offer Sorensen any needed assistance.
"Yeah, he's going to be upstairs," Sorensen told reporters.
Players have praised Staley, with Deommodore Lenoir calling his "a genius" this week. The cornerback believes Staley can bring to the 49ers defense what head coach Kyle Shanahan brings to the offense: a brilliant football mind who takes advantage of the opposition.
"Just the knowledge that he (Staley) brings to the room and how much guys respect him, respect his word when he speaks, it's a blessing for him to be here with us," Lenoir stated.
Sorensen acknowledged his appreciation for Staley's contributions and dedication to improving the 49ers' defense, saying, "It's been great having him here. I mean, he's really smart. He's got a lot of experience and stuff like that. It's huge. It's been awesome."
