49ers’ Brock Purdy opens up about De’Zhaun Stribling, Mike Evans, and Deebo Samuel additions

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy joined the Pat McAfee Show on Friday, one day after the 49ers' 41-17 preseason victory over the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium.

Purdy discussed several topics during the interview, including the 49ers' revamped receiving corps, preseason playing time, his expectations for the 2026 squad, his offseason work, and more.

Brock Purdy excited to have Deebo Samuel back

Purdy was asked about the return of wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who spent the 2025 season with the Washington Commanders after beginning his career with the 49ers. The quarterback sounded thrilled to have the dynamic playmaker back in San Francisco's offense.

"He came right back into our offense, our system, at practice, and he's done what he's always done," Purdy said. "He looks great, strong hands, and obviously the playmaking ability. I think, for us, it's put him in the backfield, put him out obviously at receiver and everything, and he can make plays at any moment, at any time.

"He's one of our explosive players, and just the energy and vibes that he brings, too, to our team, our locker room, out at practice, it's like, 'All right, our guy's back.' So, extremely happy to have Deebo back."

Rookie wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling, the 49ers' top selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, has stood out throughout training camp and the preseason. He joins a talented wide receiver room that includes Samuel and veteran Mike Evans.

Stribling has recorded 11 receptions for 109 yards through two preseason games, with three of his four catches against the Chargers going for first downs.

"Obviously, really excited about him," Purdy said. "He's a smart kid. He's come in, learned our offense. He's got strong hands, great route runner, all the things—the reasons why we drafted him. He's showing it and proving it.

"But I think just having him in there with a guy like Mike, Deebo, Demarcus Robinson, we've got a great room of receivers. And so, for him to be able to learn from them, but also be able to go out and show that he's willing to be in that starting rotation, he has shown that at camp.

"So, we're all really excited about him. We're going to have his back this year. It's a long year as a rookie; we get it, but he's shown flashes. So, we're all really excited about him."

Brock Purdy on Mike Evans' potential impact

Evans was the 49ers' biggest free-agent addition. The veteran wide receiver consistently produced during his 12 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before an injury-marred 2025 campaign, and he will look to return to his usual form with his new team.

Evans potentially gives Purdy the best boundary and red-zone receiving threat he's had during his NFL career.

"He's been awesome," Purdy said of Evans. "Obviously, another vet presence. Just what he brings to the table with our receiving corps, and just having him in that receiver room has been huge, just for guys to understand, 'Dude, this is what it takes to be great.'

"And he goes out there, and obviously he's a threat anywhere on the field. But like in the red zone, too, just seeing what he can do, it's another level that he brings to the offense down there, so I'm excited about that."

Purdy added that he leans on Evans' extensive NFL experience, including his time playing with quarterbacks such as Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield. The 49ers quarterback admitted he can't help but pick his new receiver's brain to gain as much insight as possible and, hopefully, elevate his own play.

"I'm extremely happy that we got Mike," Purdy added.
