San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters on Tuesday, marking his first media availability since news broke of team owner Jed York's arrest in the Youngstown, Ohio, area on Sunday morning.
York pleaded no contest Monday morning to two misdemeanor charges: disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools. He spent two days in the Columbiana County Jail and was ordered to pay $1,150 in fines.
According to reports, York responded to an ad on a prostitution website that was actually placed by an agent with the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force. He was arrested while attempting to meet with someone after agreeing to pay a set amount for one hour of sexual activity.
Shanahan addressed the situation Tuesday.
"I got to talk to Jed the last two days and today," Shanahan said. "Obviously, it's a very tough situation. I mean, views for the organization going forward is the same as usual. There won't be any difference in that. But I know it's extremely fresh.
"I think it's a very, very personal situation. I've got a lot of respect for Jed. I've got a lot of respect for Danielle (Jed's wife). Their family does mean a lot to me. So, with it being this personal, I'm trying as hard as I can to keep it that way."
Shanahan stressed that he did not need to deliver any message to his players about the incident because he does not believe it will impact football operations. The head coach said York likes to remain informed about team decisions but has been relatively hands-off when it comes to football matters.
"I think it's the same as always," Shanahan continued. "Jed has been as good as it gets since I've been here on letting the football people make football decisions. Jed always wants to be informed and a part of things, but Jed has been exactly what he said he would be and letting us make those decisions. He always wants to know about them and stuff, and whether he's here in the building or a text away or on a phone call, that doesn't change anything."
There have been plenty of distractions surrounding the 49ers this offseason, at least from the media's perspective, including the Brandon Aiyuk saga, Shanahan's car accident and injuries, and now York's arrest.
However, Shanahan and his team remain focused on preparing for the regular season, which begins with a Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
"From a football standpoint, it has no effect on us," Shanahan said. "As far as what we do day-to-day, what we talk about, it hasn't been mentioned in a meeting today. It doesn't have to do with what happens on the field. Everything outside of there, I think you guys can judge that better than me."
Shanahan added, "I think it's been training camp as usual."
