Despite all his efforts, Brandon Aiyuk remains a member of the San Francisco 49ers. His social media outbursts haven't changed that reality. The team has little incentive to accommodate the disgruntled wide receiver, especially with no urgency to make a decision before September.

For now, Aiyuk has no choice but to wait.


He may have hoped that publicly criticizing the 49ers, general manager John Lynch, his former agent, and the NFL Players Association would pressure San Francisco into releasing him earlier than necessary. Instead, his repeated public comments appear to have further damaged his reputation, leaving some to wonder whether the damage is beyond repair.

Aiyuk has made it clear that he hopes to sign with the Washington Commanders. However, former NFL executive Andrew Brandt believes Washington has every reason to question whether pursuing the receiver would be worth the risk, given his recent behavior.

"What a bad way to get it," Brandt, who once worked for the Green Bay Packers, said on the Ross Tucker Podcast. "Now he's making Instagram videos, just begging the 49ers to cut him, bashing the 49ers, bashing [49ers GM] John Lynch, bashing his agent, bashing the NFLPA, and talking about signing with the Commanders, where he's friends with Jayden Daniels, where the GM came from San Francisco, and I'm just thinking, Adam Peters, the GM, or anyone associated with the Commanders, you want that? Like, you think the Commanders want a piece of that?"


There has been no evidence that the Commanders are interested in signing Aiyuk. Of course, there can't be while he remains under contract with the 49ers, as any indication of interest would raise concerns about tampering.

At the same time, there has been no indication that Washington has ruled out the possibility, either. The Commanders could simply be waiting to see how the situation unfolds before making any decisions.


Still, Brandt struggles to envision any team—including Washington—wanting to bring Aiyuk into its locker room under the current circumstances.

"I can't see it," Brandt continued, "which is why he's still on the 49ers roster, because he doesn't have any money due until September, they can squat on him, and hope, against hope, that somebody offers a deal they can take, because who wants Brandon Aiyuk right now?

"He looks like he's a little off, and he's making these videos, and he's bashing the team. Who's going to sign up for that? Commanders, really? No, I don't think so."

Brandt added that Aiyuk may eventually find an opportunity with another team, but it would likely come on a low-risk, one-year veteran-minimum deal. He also suggested the 49ers could ultimately find a trade partner willing to part with a future conditional seventh-round draft pick. But the options are very limited at this point.

For now, Aiyuk's public campaign appears to raise more questions than it creates opportunities.
