Aiyuk doesn't appear to be slowing down. On Thursday, he shared another video of himself dancing, this time with the caption: "Mood cuz I'm gone be a Commander soon."
Despite the grammatical errors, the message was clear: Aiyuk appears confident that the Commanders will pursue him once the 49ers release him. Why he remains so confident in that is unclear. Commanders executives are not allowed to speak to Aiyuk while he remains signed with another team.
Anyone who has followed the situation knows this isn't the first time Aiyuk has posted controversial content. In recent weeks, he has publicly criticized the 49ers, his agent, and the NFL Players Association.
The tension between Aiyuk and the 49ers escalated after the wide receiver signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension in 2024 and later suffered ACL and MCL injuries during that season.
While rehabbing, the relationship reportedly deteriorated further, with Aiyuk allegedly cutting off communication with the organization. That prompted the 49ers to place him on the reserve/left squad list.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero recently reported that Aiyuk's social media activity is unlikely to influence the 49ers' plans. While the team is widely expected to release the disgruntled receiver at some point, there appears to be no urgency to do so.
"The bottom line is the 49ers don't need to do anything," Pelissero said. "I guarantee, [head coach] Kyle Shanahan, wherever he is, he's in, probably, Cabo or Hawaii or somewhere else; he's not sitting there looking at the Instagram and going, 'Boy, the 17th insult was the one that pushed this over the top. We should just give him his way and release him.'"
Many around the NFL believe Aiyuk's repeated social media posts have raised concerns among potential suitors, nearly eliminating his options once the 49ers move on. If a team like the Commanders does risk signing Aiyuk, it will likely be to a low-cost one-year deal.
For 49ers fans, this saga can't end soon enough.
