NFL free agency is still more than a month away, but Pro Football Focus (PFF) analyst Nathan Jahnke is already identifying potential landing spots for impending free agents. Among his projections, Jahnke connected the San Francisco 49ers to two players he believes would be strong fits for head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense.

A possible complement to Christian McCaffrey


The first name Jahnke linked to the 49ers is Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier, a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft who has spent his entire NFL career in Atlanta.


"Allgeier spent the last two seasons as Bijan Robinson's backup, excelling on outside zone runs," Jahnke wrote. "Atlanta ran outside zone at a higher rate than any other team, and Allgeier has an 82.2 PFF rushing grade on outside zones over the past two seasons, ranking sixth among running backs. The Falcons changed coaching staffs, adding Kevin Stefanski as head coach. The Browns run outside zone at a below-average rate, so a return to Atlanta doesn't make sense."

Allgeier's most productive season came as a rookie in 2022, when he rushed for 1,035 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 4.9 yards per carry. He also added 16 receptions for 139 yards and a receiving touchdown. While Allgeier only rushed for 514 yards in 2025, he posted a career-high eight rushing touchdowns.

San Francisco acquired Brian Robinson Jr. via trade last season, and while he was effective in limited action behind Christian McCaffrey, Robinson is also scheduled to become a free agent.

"The 49ers have the second-highest outside zone rate over the past two seasons," Jahnke added. "While the 49ers have Christian McCaffrey, he has averaged 4.0 yards per carry or fewer over the last two seasons and will be 30 years old before the start of next season. McCaffrey still excels as a receiver, but it would make sense to have another running back who can handle double-digit carries.

"Allgeier would be an excellent fit. His upside will be limited wherever he lands because he hasn't provided much in the passing game. San Francisco will give him the best opportunity to succeed, given their scheme and quality run blocking."


Wide receiver help could be coming


The 49ers are also expected to address the wide receiver position heading into the 2026 NFL season. Brandon Aiyuk is unlikely to remain with the team, while Jauan Jennings is set to become a free agent. Jahnke identified the Tennessee Titans as a potential landing spot for Jennings.

Meanwhile, second-year wide receiver Ricky Pearsall dealt with injuries throughout the season, further thinning San Francisco's depth at the position.

That's why Jahnke lists the 49ers as an ideal destination for Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs, a former fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

"Doubs has spent the last few seasons as the Green Bay Packers' X receiver, but Doubs might not be a high priority for Green Bay this offseason," Jahnke wrote. "They have veterans Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks in addition to drafting Matthew Golden in the first round of last season's draft. Golden started taking some snaps as an X receiver late in the season, suggesting Golden might be their X receiver going forward."

Doubs finished last season with 55 receptions for a career-high 724 receiving yards, averaging 13.2 yards per catch with six touchdowns. Over four NFL seasons, he has totaled 2,424 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns.


"The 49ers will need an X receiver next season if Jennings doesn't re-sign," Jahnke added. "Jennings has spent most of the last two seasons as their X receiver, as Brandon Aiyuk played the X position before that. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur spent most of 2008-2016 as an assistant under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan with three different franchises, so Doubs would be a strong schematic fit with the 49ers offense."
