San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle remains focused on returning for Week 1 after suffering a torn Achilles during the team's January 11 playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
As he prepares for his 10th NFL season, Kittle is looking to add to what has already been a remarkable career. The veteran has totaled 595 receptions for 8,008 yards and 52 touchdowns, cementing his place among the NFL's elite tight ends.
Beyond the numbers, Kittle is widely viewed as one of the best blocking tight ends in the league, earning the reputation of the NFL's best all-around player at the position.
Despite coming off a significant injury, Pro Football Focus (PFF) contributors Dalton Wasserman and Max Chadwick ranked Kittle as the NFL's top tight end heading into the 2026 season, placing him No. 1 in their annual top-32 rankings.
"Kittle is currently the gold standard when it comes to the tight end position," the PFF duo wrote. "In 2025, he paced all tight ends in PFF grade (90.7) for the third-straight season and fifth time in his nine-year career.
"Kittle has been one of the five highest-graded tight ends in the league in every season but his rookie year, excelling as both a receiver and run blocker. He has also been the most valuable tight end in the league across the past three seasons, according to PFF's Wins Above Replacement metric."
Having Kittle available for the start of the season would provide a significant boost to the 49ers' offense, giving quarterback Brock Purdy one of his most trusted and versatile weapons.
A five-time first-team All-Pro and seven-time Pro Bowl selection, Kittle appeared in 11 regular-season games in 2025, recording 57 receptions for 628 yards and seven touchdowns.
The 49ers open the 2026 season against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia, and Kittle remains optimistic about being ready for the international matchup.
"If it's a stretch to go play in Australia, hey, we won't do it," Kittle recently shared. "But I do feel confident that I have a chance to play. And so, I'm really excited about that, and it's been very easy for me to light a fire every single day. It's just because I know I have a chance, and I'm just going to attack it every single day, and put me in a position to succeed."
