If the fans were in charge, 49ers kicker Jake Moody might not have made the trip back to San Francisco after his team's 17-13 win over the Seahawks in Seattle on Sunday.

But they're not, and it doesn't seem like one of the men who is actually in charge of making that decision is interested in jettisoning his embattled kicker just yet.


Moody sent a 27-yard field goal off the upright during Sunday's game and later had one blocked. He's now missed six field goals in his last four games dating back to the 2024 season. Moody missed ten field goals and an extra point in 2024, which led to the 49ers bringing in some veteran competition over the offseason in the form of Greg Joseph. But the 49ers made the decision early in the preseason to go with Moody, and head coach Kyle Shanahan didn't seem to be wavering on that decision when asked by reporters Sunday if the third-year kicker's status with the team was in question.

"No question," Shanahan said.

Shanahan reiterated that stance when he was asked to verify Moody's status later in his postgame press conference.

"It's just the way you guys ask it. Right now, I have no question," Shanahan said. "I'm trying to finish today, get on a plane and evaluate stuff, and go back at it. Ask me every day and I'll answer how I am right at that moment."

Shanahan wasn't the only one standing by Moody after Sunday's win. Defensive end Nick Bosa did as well, saying he plans on continuing to support Moody regardless of how he performs.


"I'm always supportive of a guy who's struggling, and obviously that position is very cut and dry whether you're getting it done or not," Bosa said. "So I'll never turn on a teammate."

Shanahan went on to say that he didn't blame Moody for the blocked field goal, which saw safety Julian Love jump through the 49ers' line to make a clean, emphatic block.


"Obviously I was disappointed that we missed two field goals," Shanahan said. "(We) missed one, which was a big miss especially. I think we were inside the 10... Then the next one Love made a hell of a move. I think it was Love split in that D-gap. Looked like he jumped over the guys. I saw it on the scoreboard. But we got to clean up that protection. That's everyone there. That one wasn't Jake. That's just a whole operation. But yeah, we got to do better."

Shanahan also said Moody's problems didn't have any impact in his decision to go for a first down on 4th-and-2 deep in Seattle territory later in the game, telling reporters he wouldn't have been afraid to kick a field goal if the yard to gain was greater.

"I don't think that changed it," Shanahan said. "I mean would have kicked it if it was more than that."


Still, there's no question this was not the way the 49ers wanted to see Moody start the season. Moody's already hot seat reached a boiling point in the minds of fans and media on Sunday, so one has to wonder how much room for error he'll have from here in the minds of the decision makers in Santa Clara.
