Talanoa Hufanga was one of several veteran departures from the San Francisco 49ers this offseason. The former All-Pro safety followed linebacker Dre Greenlaw in signing with the Denver Broncos, as the 49ers shifted toward a younger, more cost-effective roster strategy.

On Thursday, Hufanga and the Broncos took part in a joint practice with the 49ers ahead of both teams' preseason opener on Saturday. When asked about his decision to leave the Bay Area, Hufanga was candid in sharing how emotional the move was for him.


"It was very difficult," Hufanga told reporters. "I did a lot of growing here, as a young kid coming in. I graduated early from college, and then came right in here, tried to grow as a man. This is where I got married at. This is where I had my first kid at."

San Francisco selected Hufanga in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of USC. He quickly became a fan favorite, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in just his second season. However, injuries became a concern. Hufanga only appeared in 17 games over the past two years.

Still, there are no hard feelings. Hufanga has fond memories of his time with the 49ers.

"A lot of growth was here, a lot of great memories, and a lot of great experiences," Hufanga continued. "We've been to three NFC Championships, one Super Bowl. Those are memories that you'll [remember] forever. And so, for me, just to be back here is special, but I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be."
