Recently, the 49ers brought back tight end Ross Dwelley, while also announcing the signing of defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles last year.
What should 49ers fans make of both signings?
Dwelley, 27, had a diminished role in the offense last season, catching four passes for 51 yards while playing in just 18% of the offensive snaps as opposed to second-year tight end Charlie Woerner's 23% snap count.
For now, it appears the 49ers don't have high aspirations for Dwelley, primarily viewing him as a backup to George Kittle, although his value has decreased on this team due to his inability to block, unlike Woerner.
The 49ers have been looking towards addressing the tight end position in the draft, meaning Dwelley's spot on the 53-man roster could be in jeopardy, as he may be the odd man out.
Regardless, the veteran tight end provides another body to compete at the position in training camp.
Ridgeway, 27, was a former fourth-round selection by the Indianapolis Colts, who possesses pass-rushing potential as a 6'3, 305-pound defensive tackle with above-average athleticism.
The former Eagle recorded two sacks last season, while playing 33% of the defensive snaps and in every game last season, which hasn't been the norm for the Texas product throughout his career.
If Ridgeway can maintain his health with the 49ers in 2021, this could be a high reward signing at a low cost(Ridgeway's cap hit for 2021 is just $1.8 million).
