SANTA CLARA — Coach Kyle Shanahan was on the field Sunday, as the 49ers held their first practice of training camp.As he recovers from a concussion sustained in a July 14 car accident, Shanahan stood next to general manager John Lynch deep behind the 49ers’ secondary during the 11-on-11 portion of practice.
Shanahan watched for approximately 30 minutes before exiting the practice field.
Linebacker Fred Warner said he was not surprised to see Shanahan on the field, because of the coach’s obsession with football.
Chris Foerster, who holds the title of assistant head coach, is overseeing the team until Shanahan is able to make a full return. Foerster spoke to the media after the 49ers’ first practice session of the summer.
Foerster said he did not know for certain he would be the lead man of the staff until the 49ers disclosed that information in a press release Saturday morning.
“It’s really a group thing,” Foerster said. “The title puts me in this position.”
He said Shanahan gave him a valuable piece of advice at the beginning of camp.
