SANTA CLARA — The 49ers will use caution considering the health of Kyle Shanahan when it comes to the long flight to Melbourne, Australia, for the team’s Week 1 contest. General manager John Lynch spoke to local Bay Area media on Saturday, regarding Shanahan’s recovery from non-life-threatening injuries sustained in a car accident that occurred July 14. The coach’s injuries include a broken hand, ribs, nose and a concussion.
Similar to players who have suffered a head injury, Shanahan will go through a type of medical protocol before resuming his full scope of head coaching duties.
“Just like we talk about with players, the timeline takes care of itself,” Lynch said. “He’s got to meet certain markers, but I think the expectation is that long before that, he will be better. But again, everyone responds to these things differently, and we are going to do whatever it takes to have him ‘right’ when he comes back, and that’s the right thing to do.”
