Greg Papa won’t return to 49ers’ radio booth vs. Bears as cancer fight continues

The much-anticipated return of legendary broadcaster Greg Papa to the 49ers’ radio booth will have to wait at least another week.Greg Papa will continue to rest and build strength in his courageous battle with cancer instead of calling the play-by-play action in the 49ers’ Sunday night game against the Chicago Bears.“I have decided it is not wise for me to do the game,” Papa told NBC Sports Bay Area on Sunday morning.Guy Haberman will step in to call his eighth game of the season with Tim Ryan as the analyst on KNBR, the 49ers’ flagship station.Papa has been a fixture in Bay Area media for nearly four decades. He served as a broadcaster for the Warriors, Athletics, Giants and Raiders before taking over as the voice of the 49ers in 2019.Papa was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on July 16. He went through two rounds of chemotherapy and has been cancer-free for a while. He is subject to a bone marrow transplant in the coming months, with brother Ron and sister Judy identified as perfect matches.On Dec. 17, it was announced that Papa was making enough progress to make his return to the 49ers’ radio broadcast for the Sunday night game...
