What to Know The deadline for NFL roster cutdowns to 53 players came and went Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT. All NFL teams can carry 90 players during the offseason, but must get down to 53 active players by the deadline. Most players will be placed on waivers, meaning other teams can claim them, but more experienced veteran players become free agents as soon as they are released and are not subject to waivers.
