How PFF graded 49ers' reserves in sloppy preseason Week 1 loss to Broncos

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers might have lost 30-9 to the Denver Broncos in the preseason opener at Levi’s Stadium, but their PFF grades show there still were several standout performances&period;San Francisco sat most of its starters, but still managed to get out to a 9-0 lead against the Broncos’ first team&period; Several 49ers rookies and newer free-agent additions saw a lot of time on the field, and coach Kyle Shanahan remarked on the resulting inconsistent play&period;“I liked how we started out, but after that there wasn’t much to be excited about,” Shanahan said&period; “We didn’t get many first downs&period; Four turnovers, the three picks, the fumble&period; I felt when we did make a play, whether the quarterback did, then the receiver was off&period; I felt we made too many mistakes and it was a frustrating two-and-a-half quarters&period;”Here are a few highlights and lowlights from the 49ers’ Saturday night exhibition: Top grades on offense:RG Connor Colby — 77&period;8The rookie was on the field for 41 offensive snaps — 24 pass plays, and did not allow a quarterback pressure&period; The Iowa product also received a 73&period;3 run-blocking grade&period;RG Drew Moss — 77&period;3The undrafted free agent was on the field for 29 plays — 16 as a pass blocker, and did not allow a quarterback pressure&period; Moss also received a 71&period;9 run-blocking grade&period;WR Demarcus Robinson — 76&period;5The veteran wide receiver was one of the few first-team players who suited up for the contest&period; Robinson was on the field for 18 plays, catching both of his targets for 20 yards&period;TE Jake Tonges — 67&period;3The tight end caught both of his targets for 36 yards while on the field for 38 offensive plays&period; While his run-blocking grade of 56&period;8 was on the lower side, his 71&period;6 pass-game score raised his average&period;RB Corey Kiner — 65&period;9The rookie running back was on the field for 34 plays, carrying the ball 10 times for 45 yards and catching a single pass for two yards&period; The most impressive aspect of Kiner’s performance was a 78&period;2 pass-blocking grade, while not allowing a pressure&period;Lowest grades on offense:WR Junior Bergen — 42&period;5Bergen was on the field for 22 offensive snaps, 14 of which were pass plays&period; The rookie did not catch his single target and received a 59&period;4 run blocking grade&period;RT Austen Pleasants — 41&period;4Part of Pleasants’ low grade was a result of allowing one pressure (one hit) while at right tackle for 27 offensive plays&period; The six-year veteran was more effective in the run game, receiving a 59&period;2 grade&period;RB Amber Abdullah — 38&period;2The veteran ball carrier only was on the field for five plays before sustaining a rib injury that could sideline him for some time&period; Abdullah still carried the ball four times for 20 yards during his brief appearance&period;QB Carter Bradley — 32&period;8The quarterback completed six of his 14 attempts for 32 yards and one interception while on the field for 29 total plays&period;QB Tanner Mordecai — 26&period;4Moredecai was on the field for 12 offensive plays and completed three of his six attempts for 21 yards and an interception&period;Clarification: OL Spencer Burford — 58&period;1The former guard received the 10th highest offensive grade, allowing two hurries, which might have appeared as sacks by Denver outside linebacker Nik Bonitto during the game&period; Burford was on the field for 27 offensive plays, 17 of which required him to pass block&period;“One was on our tight end going across the formation,” Shanahan of the three consecutive pressures by Bonitto&period; “He just played pass all the way, so that wasn’t on a tackle, but it was three plays in a row&period; The next two plays, we went on the quick count and were lined up wrong&period; So, he was able to jump to the snap&period;“I thought that was a little tough for Spence&period; Then on the third down, we had a bust by a player who was supposed to be outside presence on him&period; Spence was expecting a chip, so he was just sitting there inside out, and there was no guy there&period; Bonitto is a hell of a player&period; We knew that would be a challenge&period; But I thought those three plays in a row were a little unfair to Spence&period;”Pressures allowed (6): Burford – two hurriesTE Luke Farrell – one sackPleasants – one hitOL Nick Zakelj – one hurryOL Isaiah Prince – one hurryDefensive pressures (16):CB Chase Lucas – three hurriesDL Bradley Anae – three hurriesDL Jaylon Allen – two hurriesDL Bruce Hector – two hurriesDL Sebastian Valdez – one sackDL CJ West – one hurryDL Robert Beal – one sackDL Jonathan Garvin – one hurryDL Kalia Davis – one sackDL Bryce Huff – one hurryMissed tackles:LB Stone Blanton – threeLB Nick Martin – twoCB Dallis Flowers – oneCB Jakob Robinson – oneDL Jaylon Allen – oneS Jason Pinnock – oneDownload and follow the 49ers Talk Podcast
