49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall stands out on Day 9 of training camp

SANTA CLARA — At the beginning of practice Saturday, Ricky Pearsall did not appear satisfied with an inside-breaking route during warmups&period;He insisted on a do-over with 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, as the pair missed on what should have been a simple completion with no defenders on the field&period;Pearsall then hustled back to get one final pass from on the same route before moving on to the next practice drill&period; This time, the timing was right and the ball did not hit the ground&period;Pearsall’s route-running diligence carried over to 11-on-11 drills, as he stood out during his team-best five-reception practice&period;Pearsall got off to a hot start with a reception on a deep post from Purdy against the coverage of cornerback Dallis Flowers&period; Three plays later, he hauled in a Mac Jones pass of intermediate depth&period; Purdy was off and running on his best practice of camp&period;Pearsall, the No&period; 31 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has looked like the 49ers’ best receiver since being cleared off the physically unable to perform list last Sunday&period; He missed a good portion of the offseason due to a hamstring injury&period;Veteran wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Russell Gage have been solid&period; And rookie Jordan Watkins has made some plays, too&period; But Pearsall has taken his game to another level&period;Pearsall clearly has won the trust of the quarterbacks, who have given him the opportunities to make plenty of catches despite a lower workload&period; The 49ers have Pearsall on a program to reduce his workload during camp&period;“We’re easing him back in,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said this week&period; “It’ll get there&period; We’re just trying to make sure he can last throughout camp&period;”Here are some of the other notes and observations from the 49ers’ ninth practice of training camp:— Fullback Kyle Juszczyk walked back to the locker room area with a member of the team’s athletic training staff early in the practice session&period; The 49ers did not provide an update on Juszczyk’s status&period;— Watkins returned to practice after sitting out one practice&period; He practiced fielding punts and also caught two passes during 11-on-11 work&period;— The kicker competition remains too close to call, according to special teams coordinator Brant Boyer&period;On Saturday, Greg Joseph had the better day in the battle against incumbent Jake Moody&period; Joseph made his field-goal attempts from 33, 38, 43 and 48 yards&period; Moody was wide right from 48&period;“I think they’re really close,” Boyer said&period; “They are both doing a great job&period; There’s not a ton of separation there&period;”— Running back Isaac Guerendo had what appeared to be a right shoulder injury during a special-teams period&period; The team’s medical staff checked him out, and he was able to raise his arm above his head and show range of motion&period; The team provided no update on Guerendo’s status&period;— Defensive tackle Alfred Collins took a team-high five reps in one-on-one pass-rush drills&period; He finished on a high note with his best showings coming against rookie guard Connor Colby and a nice spin move against undrafted rookie guard Drew Moss&period; Collins said he is finding something to work on and improve upon every day during practice&period;— Cornerback Eli Apple, whom the 49ers signed this week, had an up-and-down day&period; He was called for pass interference on a deep Mac Jones pass intended for Andy Isabella&period; Apple had a pass breakup against wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins&period; Practice concluded with Terique Owens catching a 15-yard pass from Jones against Apple&period;Download and follow the 49ers Talk Podcast
