I've been thinking about all the injuries and why they keep happening. I was listening to some Giants talk on KNBR and the were talking about how decimated they were because of injures. Then I thought about Judge and Stanton missing so much time with the Yankees. Mike Trout missing so many games the last few years. Ohtani missing a lot of time . All these players have one thing in common. They're all incredible athletes that are great physical specimens.
Every year we hear players coming into a new season saying they're in the best shape of their life. Then the season starts anf they get hurt and struggle all year to get healthy. Maybe it's not about the training staffs the facilities or the substation. Maybe the players are getting in too good of shape. By that I mean over training. I've heard that body builders need to take their traning t the brekng point, break down an dthen rebuild. Everything has a breaking point. When stressed enough it gives out.
I remember when baseball and football players came into training camps fat and overweight. They worked themselves into shape. Most didn't have personal trainers and dietitians. They probably couldn't afford one anyway. They smoked and drank a lot and didn't worry about health or looking like an adonis. They weren't body builders. They were players. They still got hurt but it doesn't seem like they were injured as much as athletes today.
So are these athletes over training? Are they getting their bodies too close to the breaking point? CMC felt much of his problems with tendinitis came from over training. Maybe they're spending too much time with strength training and not enough on flexibility. When I say they I'm taking about all athletes. Modern science has made it possible to build enormous strength that didn't exist in the past. Bodies are scultped in ways we didn't used to see. When you see pictures of NFL players back in the 50s, 60s and 70s they didn't look like these guys today. Neither did the injury lists.
Im more willing to ride with this theory.
It has to at least be part of the reason. I watch drag racing and they used to have 1200 HP engines. now they push the limits with 12000 HP or more. Engine blocks have no water jackets and are made from a solid block of aluminum for extra strength. The spark plugs literally melt from the high temps on every run. They'ver turned the engine into a bomb that often explodes. The result is half the races are determined by who finishes without breaking down.
I know it's a different sport but the concept is the same. You can only push things so far. We're turning humans into bombs.
Lynch should buy stronger bombs and stop buying the equivalent of Cold War left overs.
