The San Francisco 49ers continue to be linked to potential trades, and for good reason. At 6-1, they are legitimate contenders, but another injury-plagued season has raised questions about their roster depth.
San Francisco could strengthen its roster before the NFL trade deadline to improve its chances of a deep playoff run and a potential return to the Super Bowl.
The 49ers are coming off a Week 7 loss to the Atlanta Falcons and entering their bye week. The extended break could give head coach Kyle Shanahan more time to evaluate potential trade targets as the team looks to address its needs.
"That's stuff, I know [general manager] John [Lynch] and our whole personnel department, they discuss that seven days a week for a long time right now," Shanahan told reporters via a conference call on Monday. "So, just hearing more about things they've been doing on the plane last night. I'll get to watch some stuff here now that I'm done with our team, and we'll be in contact over this next week."
The players are off until next Monday, while the NFL trade deadline is November 10, giving San Francisco two weeks to explore potential deals.
"We still have two weeks for it," Shanahan continued. "We still have the week when we get back, but if there's stuff that makes sense, that can improve our team in any spot, we'd love for that to happen."
However, Shanahan also recognizes that the 49ers could receive a significant boost from players returning from injuries. Several are targeting returns after the bye week, potentially in time for San Francisco's Week 9 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Those players include wide receivers Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, and Demarcus Robinson, as well as defensive end Nick Bosa and defensive tackle C.J. West. Their returns would help address two positions that have been struck by injuries this season.
"I mean, the obvious injury spots to us have been receiver and D-line," Shanahan said. "We are getting a number of those guys back at both positions, but that also doesn't exclude us from looking to something that would make sense to help us."
