The San Francisco 49ers have established themselves as one of the NFL's most efficient offenses this season, and their performance inside the red zone has been a major reason why.
Through the first six games, San Francisco has scored a touchdown on 86% of its red-zone trips, the highest rate in the league. The 49ers have scored on every trip inside the opponent's 20-yard line, averaging 6.33 points per trip while ranking first in both categories.
The offense has been just as effective at turning red-zone opportunities into productive plays. San Francisco ranks first in expected points added per play at +0.51 and second in success rate at 59% inside the 20-yard line.
While the offense has received plenty of attention for its ability to finish drives, the 49ers have also performed well defensively in the red zone. Their defense has allowed a touchdown on just 50% of opponents' trips, ranking fifth in the NFL.
Together, those numbers show how San Francisco has been able to capitalize on its own opportunities while limiting opponents when the field gets shorter.
The 49ers Are Finishing Nearly Every Red-Zone Opportunity
San Francisco's offensive production inside the red zone has been difficult for opposing defenses to match.
The 49ers have reached the red zone 21 times and scored a touchdown on 18 of those trips. The other three possessions ended in field goals, giving San Francisco a 100% scoring rate, tied for the best mark in the league.
San Francisco's success has extended beyond simply finding the end zone. Not only does their average of 6.33 points per red-zone trip rank first in the NFL, but the team also ranks second in red-zone success rate at 59%, meaning its offense has regularly executed plays that put it in favorable situations.
The 49ers have also been effective when moving closer to the goal line. They have converted 92% of their goal-to-go opportunities into touchdowns, ranking sixth in the league.
Perhaps most importantly, San Francisco has yet to turn the ball over in the red zone. That combination of touchdown production and ball security has helped the offense avoid wasting opportunities after moving deep into opposing territory.
The numbers reflect an offense that has consistently delivered when points are within reach. Rather than settling for field goals, the 49ers have found ways to finish drives with touchdowns.
San Francisco's Defense Has Also Held Up Inside the 20
While the offense has been exceptional in the red zone, the defense has contributed to the team's overall success by making it more difficult for opponents to score touchdowns.
San Francisco has allowed a touchdown on only 50% of opposing red-zone trips, ranking fifth in the NFL. Overall, opponents have scored on 78% of their trips, the fourth-lowest in the league.
The defense has also allowed 4.39 points per red-zone trip, ranking fourth, while posting a -0.09 EPA per play, the seventh-best in the league.
Those numbers suggest the 49ers have generally done a good job limiting damage once opponents reach scoring territory. Although they have not prevented every scoring opportunity, they have forced opponents to settle for field goals more often than many other defenses.
San Francisco has also limited opponents to a 42% success rate on red-zone snaps, ranking 11th in the NFL. Its goal-to-go touchdown rate allowed sits at 64%, seventh-best in the league.
The defense has yet to record a turnover inside the red zone, though, so its success has come primarily from limiting offensive production rather than generating takeaways in those situations.
The result is a defense that complements the offense well. When opponents reach the red zone, San Francisco has often managed to keep the possession from ending in a touchdown.
A Major Advantage in Scoring Situations
The 49ers' red-zone production stands out because both sides of the ball have performed well in a part of the game where individual possessions can have a huge impact on the final score.
The offense has consistently turned opportunities into touchdowns, while the defense has limited the rate at which opponents reach the end zone. That combination gives San Francisco an advantage when games come down to which team makes the most of its scoring chances.
The offense's 86% touchdown rate is particularly impressive, but maintaining that pace over a longer stretch will be difficult. Red-zone performance can fluctuate as opponents adjust and the sample size grows.
The defensive numbers also leave room for improvement. San Francisco's 50% touchdown rate allowed is strong, but the team has not generated any turnovers inside the 20, and its red-zone success rate allowed ranks outside the top 10.
Still, the early results are encouraging. The 49ers have found a way to maximize their scoring opportunities while making opponents work harder to finish drives.
If both sides of the ball can maintain that level of performance, red-zone efficiency could remain one of the biggest strengths of San Francisco's so-far promising season.
