Everyone remembers where they were the day the San Francisco 49ers traded for Christian McCaffrey.
For me, it was a usual cold and crisp October day in the midst of autumn in the UK, and believe it or not, I was packing my suitcase for my very first trip to the City by the Bay the very next day for my first 49ers game against the Kansas City Chiefs the day after my arrival.
Well, four years ago this week, the trade was complete - a move that sent literal shockwaves around the NFL. San Francisco sent a second, a third and a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and a fifth-round pick in the 2024 Draft to the Carolina Panthers.
Four draft picks lost and four years later, did the 49ers make the right choice? We all know the answer.
Why trading for Christian McCaffrey was a gamble
Given the context surrounding the move, McCaffrey's arrival in San Francisco was viewed as a gamble. The repercussions of the Trey Lance experiment were beginning to unfold, and the 49ers needed a statement signing to become the centerpiece of Kyle Shanahan's offense.
However, McCaffrey's injury history raised legitimate concerns, having appeared in just 10 games across the two seasons preceding the trade. So why go all-in on a running back, particularly one whose durability was already under scrutiny? The answer lies in McCaffrey's unique versatility and his ability to transform an offense. His multi-purpose role spoke for itself.
But instantly, the world knew that the Stanford graduate would go on to produce at such a ridiculous level.
Christian McCaffrey's 49ers statistics so far
The first way to evaluate McCaffrey's impact is through statistics.
As of Week 6 in 2026, across the five seasons represented in these statistics, he has played 54 games, recording 3,959 rushing yards, 37 rushing touchdowns, 2,288 receiving yards and 18 receiving touchdowns.
He immediately became an integral part of the offense. His ability to contribute as both a runner and receiver instantly added another dimension to the 49ers' attack. He provided an immediate boost during the team's playoff push, demonstrating why San Francisco had made a significant investment to acquire him.
McCaffrey's impact was even more apparent in 2023, when he had an outstanding campaign, rushing for 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns in 16 games. He averaged 91.2 rushing yards per game and 5.4 yards per carry, on top of recording 564 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on his way to deservedly becoming the Offensive Player of the Year.
Yet 2024 dealt him a knock so severe his career was in jeopardy. Bilateral Achilles tendinitis kept him out of the first eight games, followed by a right knee PCL injury in Week 13 that sidelined him for the final five games. No touchdowns throughout the year, and the 49ers finished 6-11 for the season as a result.
After a flight to Germany to focus on his recovery ahead of the 2025 season, McCaffrey took his meticulous workout regimen up a notch to ensure he was ready for the new campaign. He was present throughout training camp and entered Week 1 fully healthy, but the season ultimately saw him overused, averaging 3.9 yards per carry.
Despite the heavy workload, McCaffrey played in all 17 games, rushing for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns, plus 924 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns. In a season largely defined by injuries across the 49ers' roster, McCaffrey shouldered a significant offensive burden and came close to achieving a historic milestone. He finished with 2,126 combined rushing and receiving yards, falling just 76 receiving yards short of becoming the first running back in NFL history to record 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season twice.
Now, in 2026, with a reduced-workload scheme in place, McCaffrey has recorded 350 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns in six appearances, along with 190 receiving yards. His seven rushing touchdowns highlight his continued effectiveness near the goal line, providing a sensible option to end drives.

The one tangible thing missing from Christian McCaffrey's CV
There is little doubt that McCaffrey has already built the compelling case for a place in the 49ers' Hall of Fame.
Let's be honest. Like the rest of the core roster who have played under Kyle Shanahan, McCaffrey lacks one tangible achievement: a Super Bowl ring on his index finger.
For all his individual success, the ultimate prize has remained elusive. San Francisco came agonizingly close to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023. He delivered on the biggest stage, but individual excellence could not overcome the collective disappointment of another championship defeat. Thank Shanahan for his lack of awareness of the then-new overtime rules.
This is not a criticism of the organization. Building a roster capable of competing year after year is an achievement in itself, but for a select group of core players, the 49ers have come agonizingly close to getting over the line without securing the ultimate prize.
McCaffrey's individual excellence can be admired and praised. His 55 total touchdowns in San Francisco are ridiculous, especially given the injuries that have interrupted his career.
It should be argued that he's the most impactful trade in 49ers history.
"Getting traded to San Francisco has opened my eyes to so much. It was a huge blessing, but it was also a bittersweet moment for me at the time," McCaffrey said in an interview a year ago.
"I loved Charlotte, I loved Carolina. It's where I still have a home. I loved my teammates and I was a captain on that team and so it's weird when you get traded in the middle of the year.
"But when I look back on my journey and what's happened and what's transpired since then, I can't help but look back and just be so grateful for the opportunity to come to San Fran."
And as they say, the rest is history.
