San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan shared encouraging injury updates on defensive ends Mykel Williams and Nick Bosa during a Thursday interview on Bay Area radio station KNBR as the team prepares to face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 5.
Williams has been eager to return from the ACL injury he suffered during his rookie season. The second-year defensive lineman believes he will be activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list ahead of Sunday's game.
Shanahan's latest comments suggest Williams is on track to return.
The 49ers opened Williams' practice window last week, and he has continued to make progress.
"It's been good," Shanahan said. "It's been his second week back, so he had a good week last week—even better this week. So, should be good to go for Sunday."
Williams could provide a welcome boost to a 49ers defensive front that has been hit hard by early-season injuries.
Nick Bosa injury update
Defensive end Nick Bosa was seen working on the side during Thursday's practice. However, he isn't expected to play this weekend, marking his third consecutive missed game with a calf injury.
Shanahan also provided an update on the star pass rusher's recovery.
"He's getting better each week," Shanahan said. "I don't think he's far from playing, so hopefully, it'll be sooner than later. We would love to get him out there before our bye week ... so hopefully, we can do that, but still too early to tell."
