San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters Friday after news broke that defensive end Nick Bosa will miss multiple weeks after suffering a calf injury during Thursday's practice.
It's a significant blow for a defensive front that has been hit hard by injuries. Bosa and rookie defensive end Romello Height are among four players ruled out for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals.
"Losing Bosa was rough yesterday," Shanahan said. "I mean, losing six out of the 10 D-linemen in the last two weeks that have made our team is a little unusual. I don't think I've been a part of that, so that has been different."
Shanahan confirmed that Bosa suffered the injury before Thursday's practice.
"He does his warm-up deal, right before walkthrough," Shanahan said. "He does his own warm-up there on the side and just got his calf doing it ... right before practice."
Shanahan added, "I know he's bummed out, but he'll be back."
When asked how much time Bosa might miss, Shanahan did not provide a specific timeline.
"We can't say exactly, but I'm guessing around a few weeks," he said, adding that he doesn't expect this setback to be a long-term issue for Bosa.
As for whether Bosa could be placed on injured reserve, it sounds like the 49ers are still weighing their options. However, with only eight players allowed to return from injured reserve and several players already on the list, adding another player would complicate matters.
"He's right there at that point, along with a couple of other guys that are all in the same boat," Shanahan said. "Because of the number we have on it, we won't be able to do all of them. So we've got to decide, and we're just trying to guess which ones will go longer, which ones have the chances of being sooner, and it's just a guess.
"They're all really in the same boat, so we've got to decide that by tomorrow at one."
Shanahan also said he isn't sure which leg Bosa injured, so it's unclear whether the setback happened in the same leg with his most recently repaired ACL.
"I know everyone's down when anyone gets hurt," Shanahan added. "They're definitely down when a guy like Bosa gets hurt. But it happened in our walkthrough. By the time we got to practice, guys were moving around, and you don't hear people talking. It's football, so guys I think are used to it a lot.
"I think it's different when guys have a real bad injury, where you know you've lost them for the year. But it was unfortunate. Guys were down for him, but it's nothing you would have noticed if you were out there or anything like that."
