Two San Francisco 49ers players are listed as questionable for Sunday's home opener against the Miami Dolphins: running back Kaelon Black and kicker Eddy Piñeiro.
Piñeiro missed three consecutive practices this week while dealing with an illness. Apparently, the illness is serious enough that the 49ers plan to sign another kicker to the practice squad on Saturday in case Piñeiro can't play.
When asked if he knew who that kicker might be, head coach Kyle Shanahan said, "I don't. There's two guys they're deciding on. I'm not sure which one."
Regarding Piñeiro's status, Shanahan said, "He's missed Wednesday, Thursday, and today. So, I don't know if it (the illness) came on Tuesday or Wednesday morning, but he's missed all week because of it."
Black appeared on the injury report Thursday with a groin issue. After Thursday's practice, Shanahan said limiting the rookie running back was a precaution because Black was dealing with some tightness.
When asked about his optimism that Black could play Sunday against the Dolphins, Shanahan offered a characteristically vague response.
"A questionable amount of optimism," he said.
The response drew laughter from reporters, with Shanahan clearly unwilling to reveal too much about Black's status heading into the 49ers' Week 2 matchup against the Dolphins.
