Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently identified each NFL team's highest-graded player of the preseason. For the San Francisco 49ers, that distinction belonged to cornerback Jack Jones, the veteran defender entering his first season with the team.
Jones led the 49ers with an impressive 86.0 overall grade while playing 48 defensive snaps across the team's three preseason games. He also earned an outstanding coverage grade of 89.3.
"Jones was on the field for 48 snaps in preseason, just hitting the snap threshold required for this list," McGuinness wrote. "He was targeted four times from 31 coverage snaps and gave up just one reception for 14 yards, finishing the preseason with three pass breakups."
The New England Patriots selected Jones in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Entering his fifth NFL season, the cornerback has recorded 213 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, four touchdowns, 33 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery during his NFL career, according to Pro Football Reference.
In addition to his time with the Patriots, Jones has appeared in games for the Las Vegas Raiders and Miami Dolphins.
Jones' highest career defensive grade came during his rookie 2022 campaign, when he earned a 74.7 overall grade from PFF. He also posted a career-best 76.0 coverage grade that season.
If Jones can carry his strong preseason performance into the regular season, the 49ers could have added another valuable contributor to their secondary as they prepare for the 2026 campaign.
