Last week, it was widely reported that San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel signed a one-year contract worth up to $7 million, reuniting with the team that drafted him in 2019.
As is often the case with NFL contracts, however, the initial reported value doesn't tell the full story. Samuel will have to reach several performance-based incentives to maximize the deal's value.
According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, Samuel's contract includes a guaranteed base salary of just $3.27 million and a $490,000 signing bonus, making it a relatively low-risk investment for the 49ers if the veteran receiver returns to form.
The deal looks even more team-friendly when considering how the 49ers have historically utilized Samuel. In addition to catching passes from quarterback Brock Purdy, the versatile playmaker is expected to contribute in the running game and as a kick returner on special teams.
"We obviously know Deebo. He's looked fantastic. It's like he didn't miss a beat," general manager John Lynch said on Monday.
Maiocco reports that Samuel's incentives are tied to playing time, total yards from scrimmage, touchdowns, kick-return production, and the 49ers qualifying for the playoffs. By meeting those benchmarks, he can earn the full value of his contract.
Here are the key incentives included in Samuel's deal:
- $20,000 roster bonus for each regular-season game in which he is active ($340,000 total possible)
- $250,000 bonus if he plays at least 68% of the 49ers' offensive snaps in 2026
- That previous bonus doubles to $500,000 if the 49ers reach the playoffs
Scrimmage yard bonus
- $200,000 bonus for 600 to 802 yards from scrimmage
- $450,000 bonus for at least 803 yards from scrimmage
- This bonus doubles if the 49ers make the playoffs
Touchdown bonus
- $200,000 bonus for five or six total touchdowns
- $450,000 bonus for at least seven total touchdowns
- This bonus doubles if the 49ers make the playoffs
Kick return bonus
- $250,000 bonus if he finishes among the top 10 in average yards per kick return (minimum 20 returns)
- This bonus doubles if the 49ers make the playoffs
Pro Bowl bonus
- $100,000 bonus if he earns a Pro Bowl selection (starter or backup) on the initial ballot
