The signing comes after wide receiver Ricky Pearsall suffered swelling in his knee, which is related to the PCL injury that limited him last season. There is concern that he could require surgery, putting his 2026 season in jeopardy.
Veteran Christian Kirk is also banged up, dealing with a calf strain.
Samuel played just one season with the Washington Commanders following a trade from the 49ers, recording 72 catches for 727 yards and five receiving touchdowns, along with one rushing score. While solid numbers, Samuel hasn't come close to matching his breakout 2021 campaign in San Francisco, when he posted 1,770 scrimmage yards and 14 total touchdowns.
The veteran has recorded 406 career receptions for 5,519 yards and 27 touchdowns since the 49ers made him a second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
