The San Francisco 49ers' second day of training camp provided plenty of reasons for optimism, with the defense making several splash plays and a handful of offensive players continuing to generate buzz.
The 49ers' official practice report noted interceptions from safety Ji'Ayir Brown and cornerback Eli Apple, while Renardo Green, Jack Jones and Upton Stout each recorded pass breakups. On the other side of the ball, Christian McCaffrey received plenty of work in the running game, while rookie wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling continued what has been an impressive start to his first training camp.
Based on observations from those watching practice, here are the players who stood out most on day two.
Renardo Green
Green was one of the biggest standouts of the day, and his performance appears to be another positive development for a cornerback who is trying to hang onto his starting job. OurSF49ers highlighted Green's day, noting that he "looked great" and recorded a highlight-reel diving pass breakup. The X post also pointed out the difference between this year's camp and last year's: Green is healthy and able to participate fully.
Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris has been impressed with what he's seen from the young cornerback, praising his ability to play effectively in different coverages and translate what he's learned in the classroom onto the field.
"He's shown the ability to go out there and play at an elite level from off coverage, from bump," Morris said. "He's shown the ability to take it from the classroom to the field."
Morris also singled out Green's play on Monday, adding, "He made a big-time play today. He's shown up in a big way. He showed up during OTAs. He's exciting. He's got great length. He's got great ball skills. He's got all the ability in the world."

For a 49ers defense looking to build on its potential, a healthy and confident Green could be a significant piece.
Christian McCaffrey
There may not be a more important player to the 49ers' offensive success than McCaffrey, so any positive reports about the star running back are going to attract attention. That was certainly the case on day two. OurSF49ers described McCaffrey as "electric" during practice, noting that he picked up multiple big gains running to the right, left, and middle.

Those watching practice also came away impressed by McCaffrey's energy, with some observers noting that he appears noticeably faster than he did at this point a year ago. If McCaffrey can maintain that level of explosiveness throughout camp, it would provide another encouraging sign that the 49ers' offense could once again be built around one of the NFL's most dynamic weapons.
Jack Jones
Jones also stood out on the defensive side of the ball. Brad Graham noted that Jones made an impression on multiple plays, including a pass breakup on a throw intended for Stribling. Graham also pointed out that Jones consistently appeared to be in the right spots in run defense.
The team report confirmed that Jones recorded a pass breakup during team periods. Morris also praised the veteran cornerback's playmaking ability. "Jack Jones has been known as a playmaker," Morris said. "He's done a nice job since he's been here."
Jones' ability to create turnovers and disrupt opposing quarterbacks has been part of his reputation throughout his career. If he continues to make plays during camp, he could put himself in position to play a meaningful role in the 49ers' secondary. As it's been mentioned before, Jones did not come to Santa Clara to be a backup. So this will be an interesting camp.
Kaelon Black
Rookie RB Kaelon Black is already showing why the team believes he can be an important addition behind McCaffrey. Black received a significant amount of work on day two, with the team report noting that he touched the ball six times and displayed impressive agility. OurSF49ers described Black's second half of practice as particularly strong. After working primarily behind McCaffrey and Jordan James, Black reportedly broke off several big runs while showing a combination of explosiveness and power.
Graham provided perhaps the most vivid description of one of Black's runs, highlighting a jump cut that allowed the rookie to change direction in an instant.
"One thing that stood out today was a jump cut from 49ers rookie RB Kaelon Black," Graham wrote. He described Black as appearing ready to hit a hole to his right before planting his foot and "levitated an entire gap over to the right in a blink of an eye."

That kind of lateral agility could be a major asset for Black. The 49ers already have one of the league's most creative run schemes, and a back who can make defenders miss while also possessing the power to finish runs could quickly become an intriguing part of the offense.
Ricky Pearsall
Ricky Pearsall was another offensive player who generated buzz. OurSF49ers pointed to a highlight-reel catch from Pearsall, followed by a sprint down the right sideline that showcased his speed and separation. The report described Pearsall as looking "smooth" through the first two days of camp. That is an encouraging description for a receiver entering an important season. Pearsall is heading into year three, and faces increased expectations after an injury-plagued start to his career.
The team practice report also mentioned Pearsall among the receivers who received targets from Brock Purdy and Mac Jones during 11-on-11 work. Purdy said the increased speed in the receiver room is adding another dimension to the offense.
"From what I've seen the first two days, being able to air it out and get guys in those positions, for me I'm like, 'Let's go,'" Purdy said.
Pearsall's ability to consistently create separation could be especially important as the 49ers look to add more explosiveness to their passing attack.
Fred Warner
No surprise here.
Fred Warner was once again one of the most noticeable players on the field. Graham called Warner "the best defensive football player on the field" and said the veteran linebacker made multiple plays at the line of scrimmage through the first two days of camp. Warner also came away with an interception of Purdy on Monday after a pass intended for Jacob Cowing was tipped into the air. Graham's description of Warner's reaction was simple: "Dawg."

The 49ers report also highlighted Warner's impact, noting that he and Dre Greenlaw set the tone for the defense with their energy and communication. Purdy said that having Greenlaw back alongside Warner has given the defense a different feel. For Warner, the performance was hardly surprising. The veteran linebacker remains the centerpiece of San Francisco's defense, and his ability to make plays from anywhere on the field continues to stand out.
De'Zhaun Stribling
No rookie has generated more excitement than De'Zhaun Stribling. Stribling has already been one of the players to watch during the early stages of camp, and day two only added to the buzz. David Lombardi highlighted Stribling's ability to get open, pointing to a catch-and-run touchdown from Mac Jones that showcased the rookie's long-striding speed. Lombardi also noted that Stribling created separation down the seam on a throw from Purdy that was overshot and later made another impressive catch from Purdy on an early rollout.
Graham focused on another aspect of Stribling's game: his hands. On a comeback route from Jones, the pass was thrown slightly up and away, and Upton Stout made noticeable contact with Stribling as the ball arrived. Stribling nevertheless maintained control of the football. Graham said Stribling's hands have been "fantastic" through the first two days of camp.
The official 49ers report backed up the strong start, noting that Stribling hauled in multiple completions during team drills while consistently creating separation. Purdy also praised the rookie's preparation and reliability.
"Stribling has come in, understands the route depths, the details, the alignments," Purdy said. "He's proven to all of us that he's reliable and we can trust him."
With the 49ers looking for more speed and explosiveness in the receiver room, Stribling's combination of size, speed and reliable hands could make him one of the most fascinating players to follow throughout the rest of training camp.
Ji'Ayir Brown
Ji'Ayir Brown also continued to make the most of his opportunities. OurSF49ers noted that Brown has been taking advantage of his chances during camp, while Graham identified Brown's interception of Purdy as the best play of the 49ers' first-team period. Brown had to fully extend and get horizontal to make the interception on a pass Purdy attempted to fit into a tight window. It was an impressive play from the safety. Brown's ability to make plays on the football will be something to watch as the competition in the secondary continues. An interception of Purdy during team periods certainly won't hurt his cause. The test will be if he can be consistent in games.
It has only been two days of training camp, and there is a long way to go. But the early signs are encouraging. Let's continue to hope for good health.
