Pro Bowl defensive tackle Vita Vea appears to have grown tired of waiting on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to finalize a contract extension and has reportedly requested a trade. As is often the case when a star player becomes available, speculation has quickly made the San Francisco 49ers a potential landing spot.
The speculation makes some sense. The 49ers still have Super Bowl aspirations but watched the Los Angeles Rams become the Super Bowl favorites this offseason after acquiring Myles Garrett. San Francisco must also contend with the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in the NFL's toughest division.
NFL Media's Kevin Patra is among those who believe the 49ers would be a logical fit for Vea, whose presence could help San Francisco narrow the gap with its NFC West rivals.

However, while Patra included the 49ers among his eight potential landing spots, he acknowledged there are valid reasons the team might hesitate to pursue the veteran defensive tackle. Vea would likely step into the starting lineup alongside Osa Odighizuwa, but doing so could slow the development of San Francisco's promising young defensive linemen.
"Given his Northern Cali roots, San Francisco would probably be an idyllic way for Vea to sunset his career," Patra wrote. "I'm not sure that the Niners would reciprocate the desire after the acquisition of the penetrating Osa Odighizuwa, who better fits their scheme. San Francisco likely wants to allow its youngsters room to grow, including 2025 second- and fourth-round DTs Alfred Collins and CJ West, along with 2026 fourth-rounder Gracen Halton."
The 49ers have repeatedly expressed confidence in their young defensive line, believing a rotation featuring Alfred Collins, CJ West, Gracen Halton, and others can thrive with Odighizuwa anchoring the interior.
Still, Patra isn't ready to rule out a win-now move if the 49ers believe Vea can help them compete with their division rivals.
"Still, the Niners have the cap space to fit Vea in the long term, and given the injuries suffered last year, preemptively boosting the D-line before the season could provide insurance while also upgrading the veteran talent," Patra added. "The Niners are legit Super Bowl contenders. Adding a player like Vea could help them keep pace with the reigning champs from Seattle and the bulked-up Rams."
Vea appeared in all 17 games last season, totaling 34 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 13 quarterback hits, and 4.5 sacks. He recorded a career-high seven sacks in 2024 and has amassed 35 sacks over his eight NFL seasons.
