Cornerback Upton Stout played 593 snaps in 2025, the most of any San Francisco 49ers rookie last season. According to Pro Football Reference, he finished the year with 82 tackles, four tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, five passes defensed, one forced fumble, and one sack.
The 49ers selected Stout in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, primarily using him in the nickel role during his rookie campaign. His 62.0 overall grade from Pro Football Focus ranked second among San Francisco's rookies, trailing only running back Jordan James, who earned a 75.1 grade—but logged just three offensive snaps all season.
As the 49ers prepare to begin organized team activities next week, several videos surfaced on Instagram showing Stout training for the offseason program and the 2026 NFL season—his second year in the league.
Stout is expected to play a key role for the 49ers' defense in Year 2. During his three collegiate seasons at Western Kentucky, he recorded six interceptions, returning two for touchdowns. San Francisco's coaching staff would likely welcome more takeaway production from the young cornerback after the defense managed just six total interceptions in 2025.
If Stout can turn more of his pass breakups into turnovers this season, he could help the defense generate the game-changing plays it often lacked in 2025.
