The San Francisco 49ers can clinch a playoff berth in Week 16 with a win over the Indianapolis Colts or a Detroit Lions loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Once the 49ers punch their postseason ticket, anything is possible.
ESPN analyst Ben Solak believes San Francisco may have emerged as the biggest threat to the Los Angeles Rams, who have already secured a playoff spot and could finish as the NFC's top seed. Solak previously viewed the Lions as the Rams' primary challenger, but injuries have significantly diminished Detroit—a reality that was very apparent in Sunday's Rams-Lions matchup.
The 49ers and Rams split their regular-season series and could be on a collision course in the playoffs. Los Angeles nearly swept the season series, but San Francisco showed resilience in Week 5 at SoFi Stadium, pulling out an overtime victory.
In Week 10, the Rams built a 21-0 lead, only for the 49ers to rally and close the gap to one score before Los Angeles ultimately pulled away.
Despite viewing the 49ers as a legitimate postseason threat, Solak identified one glaring weakness that could prevent San Francisco from dethroning the Rams—its defense.
"However, the Rams can and should dominate the 49ers on the ground," Solak wrote. "San Francisco's defense is terribly battered, and it's not a particularly big group against the Rams' multiple-tight-end sets. The 49ers' defense is the liability in the matchup."
Even with the return of defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who has done what he can with the injury-riddled unit, the numbers remain concerning. The 49ers' defense ranks 18th in the NFL, allowing 333.6 total yards per game. It also ranks 22nd against the pass and 12th against the run.
When asked by a fan whether there is any hope for the 49ers' defense as the team looks to make noise in the playoffs, Solak offered an optimistic response.
"Yes, there is," Solak wrote. "The 49ers' defense is definitely bad, but it's the right sort of bad to get hot in the postseason. The Niners play extremely fast and hit everything that moves. Their pass rush has been a travesty since Nick Bosa's injury, but with Yetur Gross-Matos returning and Bryce Huff in hand, they do have players who can win a critical late down. Robert Saleh has not blitzed heavily during the regular season, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a change in the playoffs.
"The 49ers' defense isn't good, and if and when they're bounced from the postseason, it will almost certainly be the reason. But it's not absurd to think San Francisco could string together three plucky games of turnover generation."
