On Saturday, general manager John Lynch told reporters that Shanahan is expected to make a full recovery and expressed confidence that the head coach will be ready for the start of the 2026 season.
One of the first coaches to publicly react to the news was Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay, Shanahan's longtime friend and NFC West rival.
"Most importantly, thank God he and the other person involved is okay," McVay told reporters, via ESPN's Adam Schefter. "Perspective is everything. We talk about that all the time as coaches, and everybody goes through different things. I think the most important thing is that he's on the road to recovery, his wife Mandy, and he's got a beautiful family, and I think any time that something like that happens, it shakes you up a little bit.
"But most importantly, I have talked to him. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, and I know he's got an incredible perspective on it all.
"Kyle's a stud. I have as much respect for him as anybody, and he's a friend of mine, and I love him and hope that he's going to have a great recovery."
According to ESPN, Shanahan suffered a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, and required 40 stitches to his face following the July 14 collision with an SUV near his California home. He also sustained a severe concussion.
While the broken bones and facial injuries sound significant, Lynch revealed that the concussion remains the primary factor limiting Shanahan's involvement.
"He's a tremendous head coach, but this is bigger than that," Lynch said. "This is about his well-being. And we're going to take the time necessary."
The 49ers and Rams are scheduled to open their 2026 regular seasons against one another in an international matchup in Melbourne, Australia. If Shanahan's recovery continues as expected, the longtime friends and rivals will meet on the sidelines once again to begin the new campaign.
