Samuel recently posted the following message on Instagram, writing, "Let The Chips Fall Where They May."
Whether Samuel would entertain a return to the Bay Area remains uncertain. After the 2024 season, the veteran wide receiver made it clear he wanted a fresh start—preferably on the East Coast—ultimately spending the 2025 campaign with the Washington Commanders.
Samuel's best NFL season came in 2021, when he totaled 1,770 scrimmage yards and 14 touchdowns, including 1,405 receiving yards. However, he has been unable to replicate that production in the years since.
In fact, Samuel has not eclipsed 900 receiving yards in a season since 2021. He finished with just 727 receiving yards for the Commanders in 2025, although he did score five touchdowns. His 10.1 yards per reception marked a career low and continued a steady decline from the 14.9 yards per catch he averaged in 2023.
Now 30 years old, Samuel is no longer viewed as one of the NFL's most dynamic offensive weapons, as evidenced by his extended stay on the free-agent market. Still, he could provide value in the right offensive system, and his most productive seasons came under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
The 49ers' wide receiver room underwent significant changes this offseason with the additions of Mike Evans and Christian Kirk and the drafting of De'Zhaun Stribling. The team hopes that provides an offensive boost after the departures of Jauan Jennings and Kendrick Bourne.
While a reunion with the 49ers appears unlikely, based on the reactions from Juszczyk and Kittle, it's clear they would welcome Samuel back with open arms.
