Quarterback Mac Jones did not throw last week when the San Francisco 49ers opened organized team activities (OTAs). He's also sitting out this week's practices, with OTAs scheduled to conclude on Thursday.

The 49ers have already canceled next week's mandatory minicamp, meaning Jones likely won't throw again until training camp begins in late July. Fortunately, the veteran quarterback isn't concerned about the timeline.


"Just a little soreness in my shoulder," Jones said on Wednesday. "Everything's clean and looks good, so just kind of being precautionary, I guess is the word. But yeah, I'll be ready for training camp."

That's encouraging news for the 49ers, who have a lot of new faces on offense. Having Jones available to help carry the quarterback workload during training camp will be important.

Mac Jones addresses offseason trade rumors


Jones was the subject of trade speculation throughout the offseason, with some believing San Francisco could deal the quarterback before the 2026 NFL Draft. Ultimately, that didn't happen, and Jones appears poised to remain with the 49ers for the upcoming season.

"There was obviously a lot of speculation, and honestly, after a long year, I was just trying to enjoy it with my teammates and look back on the season," Jones said.

According to Jones, the 49ers made it clear early in the offseason that they had no plans to trade him. His value to the team became evident last season when he stepped in for starter Brock Purdy and played admirably while Purdy recovered from a turf toe injury.


"I'm fired up about it, and I kind of knew that was the situation early in the offseason," Jones said. "Everything else is kind of between my agent and the coaches and whatever."

While Jones acknowledged that he still hopes to earn another starting opportunity in the NFL, he also sees clear advantages to remaining in San Francisco.

"I also love it here, and I'm not really in the business of leaving good people, so I'm not mad about it at all," Jones said. "I think it's a great organization, and I did a lot of fun stuff last year, but it's a new year. I feel like this is the first year I've had the same offensive playbook, being in the NFL. So, that's kind of nice. If you go to a new team, you've got to learn a new playbook again and kind of do everything over, so it's good.

"I'm excited, and really, just looking forward to this summer and getting everything going again."

Mac Jones focused on now


The 49ers also reworked the final year of Jones' contract, giving him a nice pay increase. While the quarterback declined to discuss the details, he expressed appreciation for the organization's commitment.


"I love the Yorks and everybody," Jones said. "It was good to have that gesture sent my way. And for me, I want to build on it and have another good year. It's never been really about the money for me, to be honest. I'm just glad that I'm having fun again. That's priceless to me.

"And obviously, winning. Last year, we didn't finish where we wanted to finish, but just getting back to winning football games, there's a dollar sign in my mind that that's very important. So, that's what I care about. Everything else will come, and that's part of God's plan, not my plan."

For now, Jones remains focused on supporting Purdy and helping the 49ers win football games.

"I feel like I can stack another good year," Jones added. "Whenever I'm needed, that's my job, is to support Brock. It's his team, and he played very well towards the end of the year, and I feel like it was just a lot of fun. We want to continue that—the good vibes in there—and I'm looking forward to trying not to focus on the future, just focus on now."
