Now entering the final year of his rookie contract, Brown has plenty to prove in 2026. The former third-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft could be poised for a breakout season, according to Ben Arthur of FOX Sports, who named Brown among the contract-year players most likely to take a major step forward this season.
"Ji'Ayir Brown, who has five interceptions since entering the league in 2023, has started 13 games and recorded six pass breakups in back-to-back seasons," Arthur wrote.
Many expect the 49ers' defense to be significantly improved after an injury-plagued 2025 campaign. Linebacker Fred Warner and defensive end Nick Bosa should return healthy. Additionally, the team re-signed linebacker Dre Greenlaw and added defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa to bolster the front seven.
"Reinforcements on the San Francisco 49ers' defensive front in 2026 will create more playmaking opportunities on the back end for Brown," Arthur added.
Brown finished last season with 76 tackles, two tackles for loss, two interceptions, six pass breakups, and a forced fumble. His 63.6 defensive grade and 58.5 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus were career lows.
While consistency remains an area for improvement, the safety has, at times, flashed potential.
With a healthier supporting cast and added talent along the defensive front, Brown will have every opportunity to take a significant step forward in 2026. The 49ers are counting on the young safety to emerge as a key contributor in the secondary and help boost the defense during the upcoming season.
