FOX Sports reporter Ben Arthur recently highlighted potential landing spots for some of the biggest remaining free agents, linking Samuel to an NFC West rival: the Seattle Seahawks (h/t Peter Panacy of Niner Noise).
Arthur noted that Seattle could benefit from additional depth at wide receiver. Samuel would join a group that already includes Cooper Kupp, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and Rashid Shaheed, giving the Seahawks another versatile offensive weapon.
There is also a clear connection between Samuel and Seattle's coaching staff.
"New Seahawks offensive coordinator Brian Fleury and the 30-year-old Samuel overlapped in San Francisco from 2019-24, including for Samuel's first-team All-Pro season in 2021," Arthur wrote.
A potential signing would create a high-profile NFC West storyline, with Samuel facing his former team twice a season if he lands in Seattle.
Samuel's most recent production with the Commanders was steady but unspectacular. He finished the season with 72 receptions for 727 yards and five touchdowns, marking the fourth consecutive year he has failed to surpass 900 receiving yards. His peak remains his breakout 2021 campaign with the 49ers, when he totaled 1,770 scrimmage yards and 14 touchdowns.
The Seahawks aren't the only team linked to Samuel this offseason amid media speculation. In April, Bleacher Report's Joseph Zucker named the Los Angeles Rams as another strong potential fit, noting that Sean McVay is the kind of coach who might be able to rejuvenate Samuel's career.
"Depending on the financial terms, it's an opportunity L.A. may not want to pass up," Zucker wrote.
