Former 49ers offensive lineman Alex Boone recently joined Bay Area radio personalities Larry Krueger and Grant Cohn on the 49ers Collective podcast (h/t to Niner Noise for the find), where he delivered a blunt message about what lies ahead for Pearsall as he heads into his third NFL season.
Boone believes Pearsall is approaching a critical year in his career, especially with the 49ers continuing to add depth at wide receiver, including this year's top draft selection, De'Zhaun Stribling.
"I think Ricky's going to do it this year," Boone said. "And I think Ricky is looking back going, 'Hey, it's either now or never.' They just drafted a f--king receiver. Dude, the writing is on the wall. If you don't do it now, we're just gonna draft one more receiver, and then your f--king seat has now vanished in this room. You need to have a breakout year this year."
Despite the strong warning, Boone also pointed to the potential advantages in Pearsall's situation, noting the presence of newly-acquired veteran Mike Evans as a valuable mentor in the 49ers' wide receiver room.
He also suggested that Evans' presence could draw attention from opposing defenses, which would benefit Pearsall by opening up opportunities in the passing game.
"You want to talk about one of the toughest f--king receivers since Anquan Boldin," Boone said. "You f--k with anybody on this dude's team, he's going to punch you in the face. But at the same time, he's the most reliable dude. His hands are f--king sticky, icky. That's why you could learn so much from him."
Boone notes that the chances to prove yourself in the NFL are limited, and time may be running out for Pearsall.
"I really want Ricky to have a great year, because if you don't, they're going to f--king cut you, dude," he said.
Boone acknowledged that injuries are challenging, but availability is crucial to a successful NFL career.
"Football's a f--king wild sport, and you're going to get hurt, and you need to learn how to deal with it," Boone concluded. "But if you don't do it now, De'Zhaun Stribling is taking your spot for sure, and you're gone."
