Now fully healthy, Purdy enters the offseason with a renewed focus on refining his game, and offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak outlined the key areas the team wants the quarterback to improve heading into the 2026 season.
Kubiak noted that this offseason differs from last year because Purdy lost valuable development time while recovering from his lengthy injury during the 2025 campaign.
"He came out, had an awesome camp, had an awesome first week, and then he has the injury," Kubiak said on Thursday. "Then, he comes back from the injury, and you could tell it took him a while to kind of get back to feeling 100 percent."
According to Kubiak, one of the primary points of emphasis for Purdy this offseason will be becoming even more effective from within the pocket.
"He's always got to strive to be better in the pocket, whether that's your footwork, your mechanics in the pocket, remaining a passer in situations where you could make a play down the field," Kubiak explained. "And then, things we're always striving for with him is understanding defense better, accuracy, all those things.
"But I think Brock, as we're really watching these cut-ups, he's really striving to be a better, stronger player in the pocket, and we're going to work on those things this offseason."
When asked to elaborate on what improving in the pocket means, Kubiak reiterated this previous point—but with more detail.
"I wouldn't say it's one thing," Kubiak said. "Brock's a really athletic guy. He can make plays with his feet. But are you missing an opportunity to make a better play down the field, maybe because you decided to run, or you moved a certain way, and you missed a guy down the field?
"So, it's just working on pocket movement, working on ways you can move in the pocket to find throwing lanes, and being more consistent in that area."
The 49ers don't plan to limit Purdy's athleticism. Instead, they aim to help the quarterback make better decisions about when to use it.
