Analysts have consistently praised Gracen Halton's explosive get-off at the line of scrimmage. This trait likely contributed to the San Francisco 49ers' selection of the defensive tackle in the fourth round (No. 107 overall) of the 2026 NFL Draft. Combined with an impressive 86.9 run-defense grade from Pro Football Focus, Halton enters the league as a prospect capable of contributing early along the defensive front.

Halton also brings proven pass-rush production. Over the past two seasons, he recorded 8.5 sacks, 59 total pressures, and 13 tackles for loss, showing an ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks and collapse the pocket from the interior.


The 49ers made it a priority this offseason to reinforce a defensive line that struggled to generate consistent pressure in 2025. You may have heard the NFL-low 20-sack statistic more than a few times.

At just under 6-foot-3 and 293 pounds, Halton lacks elite size for a traditional interior defensive lineman. However, his athleticism helps offset any concerns.

At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Halton ran a 4.82-second 40-yard dash (third among interior defenders) and posted a 1.70-second 10-yard split (fifth), reinforcing what evaluators saw on college film. This explosive first step allows him to beat interior blockers consistently.

"Halton is a leverage demon with a great first step to get into backfields. Penetrating schemes will love his skill set at 3-technique," CBS Sports analyst Mike Renner wrote.

The key question moving forward is whether Halton's quickness and technique will translate to success at the NFL level. He is expected to begin his career as part of a defensive line rotation, joining a revamped interior that includes newly acquired Osa Odighizuwa, who coincidentally has a similar size to Halton, along with recent draft additions Alfred Collins and CJ West.


Evaluators highlight Halton's knee bend and lower-body strength as critical traits that help him maintain leverage against bigger offensive linemen—tools that should earn him early snaps within coordinator Raheem Morris' defense.

Still, his lack of ideal size could present challenges, particularly against double teams and power-running schemes in short-yardage situations, potentially reducing opportunities early on. Even so, Halton's motor and relentless speed give him a clear path to carving out a role along San Francisco's defensive front in 2026.
