At first glance, it's difficult to envision Kaelon Black carving out a meaningful role on the San Francisco 49ers' roster as a rookie. After all, All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey remains the centerpiece of the offense.

In 2025, McCaffrey led the NFL in touches with 413 while totaling 2,126 scrimmage yards and 17 touchdowns. He has now eclipsed 2,000 scrimmage yards in two of his last three seasons and is once again expected to shoulder a heavy workload in 2026.


Still, not everyone is dismissing Black's potential impact. Alex Kay of Bleacher Report recently identified late-round value picks from the 2026 NFL Draft who could emerge as fantasy football sleepers—and Black made the list.

Kay's case centers on McCaffrey's availability. The veteran back missed all but four games in 2024 due to injury and will turn 30 in June, raising reasonable questions about long-term wear and tear. Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle speculated that Black's selection could signal the 49ers are preparing for a future transition at the position.

"That is, don't bet on the 49ers signing McCaffrey to an extension before his contract expires after the 2027 season," Branch wrote.

While many analysts labeled Black a reach—projecting him as a Day 3 prospect—Kay believes the rookie has a legitimate chance to secure a sizable role early on.

"McCaffrey missed large swathes of time in both 2020 and 2024 after leading the league in touches the prior season," Kay wrote. "Given the soon-to-be 30-year-old veteran paced the NFL with 413 touches last year—no other player even broke 370—there is a real possibility McCaffrey sits out at least a few games in 2026."


If that scenario unfolds, Black could be next in line. Kay projects him to compete with Jordan James and Isaac Guerendo for the No. 2 role, and potentially handle lead-back duties in any games McCaffrey misses.

"Although he was never a starter during his time with the Hoosiers, Black helped lead his program to a national title while contributing 1,040 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 186 totes this past season," Kay wrote.

"Black isn't the biggest back—he stands a shade under 5'10" and tips the scales at 208 pounds—but his compact frame and noteworthy 4.45-second 40-yard dash speed indicate he has the size and athleticism to hold up as an NFL rusher."

He concluded, "You simply won't find better value at the end of a fantasy draft."
