The San Francisco 49ers were among several NFL teams that showed pre-draft interest in Houston Cougars kicker Ethan Sanchez. That interest has now led to an invitation to the team's upcoming rookie minicamp, which Sanchez has reportedly accepted, according to Ryan Fowler.


Sanchez played four collegiate seasons, beginning his career at Old Dominion for three years before transferring to Houston for his final season. In 2025, he converted 21 of 26 field-goal attempts and was perfect on 43 extra-point tries.


The 49ers, of course, already have their long-term kicker in Eddy Piñeiro, who signed a four-year, $17 million contract to return after a strong 2025 season—his first with San Francisco.

Still, the team continues to evaluate kicking competition and depth options during the offseason. The 49ers announced eight undrafted free-agent signings to go along with their eight draft selections and have extended additional rookie minicamp invitations to select players, including Sanchez.
