Left guard remains the only unsettled position along the 49ers' offensive line—assuming the team reaches a contract agreement with All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams. Jones is expected to compete with second-year lineman Connor Colby and other candidates for the starting role.
"Robert Jones is a guy that we've tracked and liked, played in a very similar system," general manager John Lynch said this week. "... So he's very familiar with the things that we do, the way we play, and we've liked him."
Jones missed the entire 2025 season due to a neck injury.
"Last year, he didn't play with his neck deal, kind of an interesting situation where he had to sit out the year," Lynch added. "But we obviously did a thorough look into that situation, and we felt good, we felt confident—not me, our neuro guys, our spine guys did—and so we felt good about that."
