San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch provided an update on left tackle Trent Williams' contract negotiations during the NFL meetings in Phoenix, Arizona. Lynch told reporters that the team believes it is getting closer to a deal with Williams, according to multiple reports.

"We've had good communication throughout," Lynch said. "I would say, in the last week, it's kind of intensified, and I feel like we're on the precipice of something good happening—but we'll see."


Despite the optimism, Lynch cautioned that he's been optimistic at previous points in the negotiations, suggesting that nothing is certain regarding the outcome.


Communication intensifying is good news, and the 49ers remain hopeful that a resolution can be reached.

"Don't want to make any statements, like, 'Hey, we're right there,' because these things have felt like that before," Lynch said. "But I do feel like we're in good communication and hopeful."


Williams, who will turn 38 ahead of the 2026 season, carries a $46.3 million salary cap hit this year. With Williams entering the final year of his current contract, the 49ers are likely seeking ways to reduce his financial impact.

"This one's never got ugly," Lynch said. "It's been very straightforward, direct. And I just think there's a lot of nuance to that situation. He's one of the great players, I think, to ever play the game, but there's a reality with his age. It's like, how do you thread that needle, and how do you find a deal where everyone's taken care of and happy?


"So, I think there's some special nuance to it that we've tried to work through, and both sides have been good with that, so that's kind of where I'll leave it."

Looking ahead, the 49ers are widely expected to consider drafting a long-term successor for Williams in next month's NFL Draft. However, it remains unclear whether they will use their first-round draft pick for that purpose, as many mock drafts predict.
