According to Green Bay Packers reporter Easton Butler, the 49ers are one of five teams that have reached out to the Eagles about acquiring Carter. Unfortunately for 49ers fans, the Seattle Seahawks have also reached out about him. And several other teams have also called to "kick the tires" on a potential trade.
How serious the 49ers are at trading for Carter remains to be seen. The former first-round pick from Georgia only appeared in 11 games in 2025. But when he's played, he's been a solid starter for the Eagles.
In 2023, Carter was a runner-up for Defensive Rookie of the Year. He was a Pro Bowler in 2024 and 2025, and was second-team All-Pro in 2024. Carter has been a difference-maker on the field, but he is ready for a contract extension, and he will be expensive to retain. So the Eagles could decide to move on from him.
But the Eagles may also consider moving on from Carter due to multiple off-field issues, including a 2023 conviction for reckless driving/racing linked to a fatal crash, a 2024 benching for being late, and a September 2025 ejection for spitting on Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.
There are also concerns over Carter's practice habits and conditioning.
So, would the 49ers be willing to bring in a player with so many red flags? The production on the field is without question. But given that the 49ers would have to surrender draft capital, agree upon a new contract with him, and manage his off-field issues, it is likely more than Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch want to mess with.
Still, it's interesting that San Francisco has called to check in with the Eagles, if this is indeed true. It's further proof that San Francisco is intent on upgrading its defensive line this offseason. And following a season in which they managed to sack opposing quarterbacks only 20 times, they should be looking for upgrades.
