Mac Jones has started seven games for the 49ers this season in place of injured starter Brock Purdy, and Sunday's matchup against the Los Angeles Rams could mark his sixth straight start.
Jones has performed well, guiding San Francisco to a 6-3 record while throwing for 1,832 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions. His toughness and leadership have helped stabilize the 49ers' offense in Purdy's absence.
Still, Shanahan has been consistent about one thing—repeatedly stating that when Purdy is healthy, the job is his.
That raises a natural question: Is Shanahan worried about the team's chemistry when Purdy eventually returns?
"No, I don't really get concerned too much with offensive chemistry," Shanahan said this week. "Mac's showing he can play at a high level. Everyone knows that Brock can play at a high level. When Brock is healthy and he's himself, we know he'll play at a high level."
Purdy has been battling a turf toe injury suffered in Week 1. He briefly returned in Week 4 before experiencing a setback that has kept him sidelined since.
Although Purdy remains a limited practice participant, Shanahan believes the quarterback's strong play will make any chemistry concerns irrelevant upon his return.
"So as long as you have a quarterback playing at a high level, I don't worry too much about the chemistry," Shanahan said.
The 49ers will host the Rams on Sunday at Levi's Stadium in a pivotal NFC West clash with potential playoff implications. San Francisco won the first meeting in Week 5, 26-23 in overtime.
