The San Francisco 49ers' decision to make Brock Purdy one of the NFL's highest-paid quarterbacks was widely viewed as a move to secure long-term stability at the most important position. While some critics questioned the timing, most agreed it was a necessary investment in the team's future.

However, ESPN's Bill Barnwell sees things differently. The veteran writer recently listed Purdy's five-year, $265 million contract among the 49ers' biggest offseason disappointments, suggesting the deal may have been premature.


Barnwell acknowledged that Purdy remains the better option compared to Mac Jones, who has started six games in his place this season. Yet, he questioned whether the performance gap between the two quarterbacks justifies the massive difference in their salaries.

"Well, the conversation is going to be out there, right?" Barnwell wrote. "Jones hasn't been as good as Purdy, but in five starts filling in, Jones has gone 4-1 and posted a 55.2 QBR. Purdy is better, posting a 68.8 mark over 2022-24, but is the difference between the two worth more than $48 million per season?"

The 49ers currently sit atop the NFC West with a 5-2 record, despite Purdy appearing in only two games this season. That reality has fueled debate over the value of his franchise-record-setting extension and whether San Francisco acted too soon.

With Purdy on track to miss his sixth game of the season due to a lingering toe injury, Barnwell speculated on whether head coach Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers' front office would make the same decision if given a do-over.

"Maybe," Barnwell wrote, "but $48 million would pay the salaries of a bunch of starters for a team that has had so many other talented players get hurt this season."


Barnwell's argument echoes what some analysts have suggested since the offseason—that by committing big money to Purdy now, the 49ers limited their financial flexibility. Had they waited, San Francisco might have been able to keep more of its veteran core rather than undergo such significant roster turnover.

Still, it's hard to label a 5-2 team as struggling. The 49ers remain one of the NFC's top contenders, even with Purdy sidelined.

For San Francisco, extending Brock Purdy was always about the long game. While the short-term results haven't aligned with expectations, the organization believes its quarterback can lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl title.
