Expectations were already high for Williams, but they've grown even more after star pass rusher Nick Bosa suffered a season-ending ACL injury. The rookie's development is now even more critical to San Francisco's defensive front.
Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon recently handed out early grades for every first-round selection. Williams received a "C-", with Gagnon noting: "Injuries have also been a factor here, but the Georgia product has basically been a non-factor 176 snaps into his NFL career. He has one QB hit in four games, although he did flash in a Week 3 victory over New Orleans."
While the outside evaluation was less than flattering, the 49ers remain optimistic about their first-round pick's NFL future and contributions on defense.
"He's been really good," general manager John Lynch told NBC Sports Bay Area. "He's had some things that are bothering him physically throughout, but he hasn't used those as excuses. He's found a way."
Williams has lined up both inside and outside, with 32 of his snaps coming along the interior—showcasing the versatility the team envisioned when drafting him.
"The thing that's impressive about Mykel, we're asking a lot of him," Lynch continued. "We play him outside on both sides early. We move him inside—different techniques to rush the passer, and for him to do it as flawlessly as he has. And I think you'll see more dynamic play coming up because the guy's got so much in his body."
Lynch added that even opponents have taken notice, commenting on the challenges of facing Williams.
"He's tough to move. He's physical. He loves the game," Lynch said. "I think his best football is certainly ahead of him. He's only going to get better. He's a young kid, and we're really proud of his effort thus far."
