San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Thursday morning to provide an update on quarterback Brock Purdy's injury status. NFL insider Ian Rapoport previously reported that Purdy is expected to miss two to five weeks after suffering a toe injury in Sunday's win over the Seattle Seahawks.

While Lynch wouldn't confirm that exact timeline, he did make it clear that the 49ers will likely be without their starting quarterback in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints. Instead, it will probably be veteran Mac Jones who steps in as San Francisco looks to improve to 2-0 on the season.


"What I can confirm is I talked to, obviously, our trainer, our doctor, Dr. [Robert] Anderson, who's the preeminent foot and ankle specialist in the NFL," Lynch said. "What we're dealing with is kind of a week-to-week thing. That's our information.

"Brock's doing well, coming back from it, and we'll just treat it as such. He's doing a nice job, doing everything he can to get back out there as soon as possible. And so, that's where we're at."

Lynch noted that Purdy underwent the standard round of tests and scans to evaluate the injury and establish a recovery outlook.

"We did that, and that led to the diagnosis and the timeline of kind of a week-to-week-type deal," Lynch said. "I'll leave it at that. It's medical stuff. We don't get into all the details there, but that's where we're at—on a week-to-week deal.

"Going into the scans and all that, I'll tell you that the feeling was more on the positive side than what it could have been going in there. That was a good thing. We look forward to getting Brock back, but in his stead, we're confident in Mac and his ability to compete at a high level for us."


With Jones set to make his first start in a 49ers uniform, Lynch emphasized the team's confidence in the former first-round pick, who has considerable starting experience.

"We're really pleased to have Mac here," Lynch said. "Mac was a guy, back in the draft process, we studied a lot, really liked. He has had his ups and downs in his NFL career, but since he's been a part of us, really has taken to our offense, really fits our culture. He can run our offense, and run it well, and we don't have to change a whole lot when he's out there.

"So, I'm excited to see him get an opportunity to go show what he can do. And we've got to go put together another solid effort on the road in another tough place to play, in New Orleans."

The 49ers will now turn to Jones as they head into a road matchup at the Caesars Superdome against the Saints—and likely beyond.
