One of the biggest storylines from the San Francisco 49ers' first training camp practice—aside from Jacob Cowing's injury—was the presence of wide receiver Jauan Jennings on the field.

On Tuesday, general manager John Lynch predicted that Jennings would practice despite his contract dissatisfaction. Still, as last summer's Brandon Aiyuk "hold-in" reminded everyone, such situations can take unpredictable turns.


Jennings is entering the final year of the two-year deal he signed in 2024 and has reportedly considered requesting a trade if a new agreement isn't reached. For now, no trade request has been made, and Jennings' decision to practice suggests the two sides may still find common ground.

"Definitely coaching-wise, you want everyone out there on the field, especially some of your better players," head coach Kyle Shanahan said after practice. "And Jauan's been a hell of a player for us here for a while, one of our leaders, too."

Shanahan added, "He had a good practice, and it was great to have him out there."

Jennings appeared to be in good spirits during the session, smiling and engaging with teammates.

"Seems like Jauan," Shanahan added.


Tight end George Kittle also noted that Jennings looked like his usual self and that the contract disagreement hasn't changed anything on the practice field.

"Jauan's always out there with me," Kittle said. "He's doing great, I think. ... I mean, Jauan was awesome today. Great energy in the locker room yesterday, great energy today—his normal self. So, just appreciate him attacking it like there's nothing going on."

Shanahan acknowledged that contract situations can unfold in many ways. The 49ers have dealt with distractions in the past, and the goal is to keep this one from becoming an issue in 2025.

"It's something that I try not to get too worked up about because there's not always much I can do about it," Shanahan said. "I always try to recommend them to do what I think will help them the most, and I think Jauan's doing that."

Jennings' decision to practice amid his contract uncertainty is a positive sign for the 49ers. With Brandon Aiyuk still rehabbing and the receiver depth a growing concern, keeping Jennings engaged will be crucial as the team heads into the 2025 season.
